NAVIGATING COMMON ISSUES IN BABY GATE INSTALLATION
CRITICAL INSTALLATION ADVISORY
Installing baby gates requires specific expertise; proceeding without professional assistance is entirely at your own risk and expense.

I have encountered various installation challenges that might resonate with your situation and offer valuable solutions.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE ONE: UNEVEN SURFACES
CHALLENGE: INSTALLATION ON AN UNEVEN SURFACE

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE:
-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the necessary size for the gate and any extensions needed. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- Once you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder with a metal/aluminum disc to cut the gate, ensuring precision as shown in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the area you plan to cut and insert it into the modified section of the gate to ensure that the tension knob fits securely.
- This procedure will become clearer once you have the gate physically present.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE TWO: MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL
CHALLENGE: MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE:
-
- The gate/extensions should already be prepared.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and level the wall surface.
- Ensure the Putty is completely set BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
- Do not depend on the gate for safety until all steps are finalized and the gate has been tested for stability.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE THREE: OUTDOOR INSTALLATION
CHALLENGE: INSTALLING A BABY GATE OUTDOORS
While installing baby gates outdoors can be a quick and economical choice, it may void the warranty on your gates.

I advise against installing baby gates outdoors as a permanent solution. This could potentially void your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are primarily designed for indoor use and are not meant for outdoor installation due to their vulnerability to adverse weather conditions.
- This limitation is detailed in the warranty documents that come with the product packaging.
- Ignoring the warranty guidelines may result in the loss of warranty coverage.
For a long-lasting resolution, consider hiring a contractor who specializes in security or latch gates. Although this may incur higher costs, it is the most advisable course of action.
PREPARATION OF THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these methods guarantee complete rust protection; they are intended to extend the lifespan of the gate under South African weather conditions.
Regular and thorough treatment every 1-2 months can significantly help in rust prevention.
To reduce rust and moisture accumulation, follow these steps:
-
- Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover the bottom surface areas as well.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will allow water to escape and prevent rust from forming inside the hollow gate, where moisture may collect at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes help provide ventilation to avoid moisture buildup.
- Apply a light coat of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available on takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the rusted areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product instructions carefully.
- Consult the product description on takealot.com; you may need to acquire mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black color, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
